Lake fishing

Steve Flood starting his trip off right...

With the river on and off, we’ve been fishing lakes quite a bit lately.  As always, the Spring is an excellent time to target large trout and your chance of hooking into something 24″ or better are pretty good on one of the local and private lakes we fish.  While you’ll miss the incredible dry fly fishing during the Callibaetis and Damsel hatches of June and July, the size of the fish in April usually make up for it.  While we’ve seen plenty of lake midges on the water, leeches, scuds, and streamers have been the star players.  A long cast and a long retrieve also are key to a successful day, as fish that see boat will spook.  For this reason we typically bring along a 7 or 8 weight.  A spey rod with a sinking line can also be deadly…
