Fall is here

Gerry Lenzen with one of several nice browns

With a push a cold air (and snow) it looks as though Fall has finally arrived.  The leaves are prime, the baetis are hatching, and the browns are on the prowl…  Local and private lakes have been fishing extremely well lately, mostly with leach patterns and small streamers.  The key most likely has been darker days and less fishing pressure.  The waters inside Yellowstone Park have been heating up as well.  We’ve had some good reports of the Lamar Valley fishing well with fall baetis and drakes.  A cloudy day on the Firehole this time of year can be fantastic dry fly fishing as well.  If you are after a bigger brown, the Madison or the Yellowstone are good bets right now.  If you really want a hog, commit to fishing streamers all day – it may take you a few days of paying dues but if you stick with it, eventually it’s going to happen.  If you’d rather go for more numbers on the stone, stick with nymphs on sunny days or size #10-16 parachute patterns on overcast days.
